Subcutaneous research vial2

Subcutaneous research vial, self-logged doses (community)

Amount
25 to 50 mcg
How often
Per injection; the app data gives no schedule
Route
SubQ, vial (powder)

Who: PeptIQ app users logging research-vial injections; 30 users. No trial tested subcutaneous oxytocin for mood or social effects.

Note: Logged doses span 0 to 400 mcg. One guide argues injected oxytocin does not reach the brain the way a nasal dose does.

Subcutaneous research vial, guide-collected ranges (community)

Amount
100 to 500 mcg
How often
Once daily
Route
SubQ, vial (powder)

Who: Research-use protocols collected by one dosing guide, in three tiers: 100, 200 to 300 and 400 to 500 mcg. Several times higher than what app users log.

Note: The guide says these ranges have no human efficacy data and that subQ dosing should not be expected to reproduce nasal effects.

Other protocols: injected (ready-to-use vial)1

Bleeding after birth, FDA label (Pitocin IM)

Amount
10 IU
How often
One IM injection after the placenta is delivered
Route
IM, ready-to-use vial

Who: Hospital use after delivery of the placenta, per the Pitocin label. Shown so readers can see the approved scale; not a self-use dose.

Note: The label gives USP units. Labor induction is an IV drip started at 0.5 to 1 milliunit per minute and raised by 1 to 2 milliunits per minute every 30 to 60 minutes; rates above 9 to 10 milliunits per minute are rarely needed at term. For bleeding after birth the IV option is 10 to 40 units added to the running drip (max 40 units per 1,000 mL). The calculator does not take infusion rates.

Other protocols: nasal, nasal spray8

Social cognition research, single nasal dose (trial range)

Amount
18 to 40 IU
How often
One dose per session; a few studies repeated it up to 182 times
Route
Nasal, nasal spray

Who: Mostly healthy adults, 79% men, across 38 randomized trials from 1990 to 2010 (1,529 people).

Timing: In a spinal-fluid study, 24 IU took up to 75 minutes to raise levels around the brain, while blood levels peaked at 15 minutes.

Sex and partner bonding, single dose before sex (trial dose)

Amount
24 IU
How often
One nasal dose before sex, on study sessions
Route
Nasal, nasal spray

Who: 29 healthy couples in a naturalistic study. Drive, arousal and erection did not change; orgasm intensity and contentment after sex rose, with small to moderate effects.

Female sexual dysfunction, on demand before sex (trial dose)

Amount
32 IU
How often
Within 50 minutes before sex, over 8 weeks
Route
Nasal, nasal spray
Cycle
8 weeks per arm in the trial

Who: 30 pre- and postmenopausal women with sexual dysfunction, crossover trial. Scores improved on oxytocin and on placebo alike, with no significant difference between them.

Weight loss in obesity, four times daily (trial dose)

Amount
24 IU
How often
Four times daily for 8 weeks
Route
Nasal, nasal spray
Cycle
8 weeks in the trial

Who: 61 adults with obesity in a randomized trial. No difference in weight change vs placebo (0.20 vs 0.26 kg), though people ate less at a test meal.

Social ease or anxiety, on demand (guide protocol)

Amount
18 to 24 IU
How often
As needed, not daily
Route
Nasal, nasal spray

Who: Adults using compounded or home-made nasal spray before a social window, per dosing guides. Not tested as a treatment.

Timing: Guides say 30 to 75 minutes before the event. One guide starts at 18 IU to gauge response before 24 IU.

Intimacy, before sex (guide protocol)

Amount
24 to 40 IU
How often
As needed, 30 to 45 minutes before intimacy
Route
Nasal, nasal spray

Who: Adults or couples using nasal spray before sex, per a dosing guide. Some couples dose together.

Note: In trials, nasal oxytocin did not raise desire or arousal; guides call PT-141 the stronger libido tool.

Social and mood, standard nasal use (community)

Amount
20 to 40 IU
How often
Once daily or only before social situations
Route
Nasal, nasal spray

Who: Self-reported in community posts gathered from r/Nootropics, r/Peptides and Bluelight. The most common community protocol.

Low daily dose for anxiety (community)

Amount
10 to 20 IU
How often
Once daily for 2 to 4 weeks
Route
Nasal, nasal spray
Cycle
2 to 4 weeks

Who: Self-reported in community posts; some say this lower dose is enough for anxiety.

Other protocols: sublingual, other form1

Compounded sublingual troche (community)

Amount
10 to 40 IU
How often
1 to 2 times daily
Route
Sublingual, other form

Who: Self-reported by people on physician-prescribed compounded troches. No trial compares sublingual and nasal dosing.

Note: One guide says compounded troches often carry low hundreds of IU per dose, far above this range, with limited human data.

Other protocols: injected1

Research vial, vendor reference dose

Amount
20 to 50 mcg
How often
Once daily or as studied
Route
SubQ, vial (powder)

Who: A research vendor's reference dose for study design, given for nasal or subcutaneous use.

Note: The vendor equates this to about 10 to 25 IU, using 500 IU per mg; at the European Pharmacopoeia's 600 IU per mg it is 12 to 30 IU.

Vials are sold in mg; studies and sprays dose in IU. This page uses 600 IU per mg (about 1.67 mcg per IU), the European Pharmacopoeia labelling convention, which the WHO International Standard (12.5 IU in about 21 mcg) matches. One vendor and one guide use 500 IU per mg, which puts about 20% more peptide in each IU dose. Purity varies, so treat mg-to-IU as approximate. SubQ doses of 20 to 50 mcg come out at 2 syringe units or less at these mixes, below what the vendor says a U-100 syringe reads well.

If you miss a dose

For a daily compounded spray, one pharmacy says skip the missed dose if the next one is within 6 hours, and never double up. For on-demand use there is nothing to make up.

Oxytocin dosage questions

What is the usual oxytocin nasal spray dose?

24 IU is the research standard. A review of 38 trials covered 18 to 40 IU, mostly as single doses. Community users report 20 to 40 IU once daily or before social events, and 10 to 20 IU for daily low-dose use.

What dose do people inject from a research vial?

It varies a lot and no trial backs any of it. PeptIQ app users most often log 25 to 50 mcg per injection (range 0 to 400 mcg). One guide collects community protocols of 100 to 500 mcg once daily, and one vendor lists 20 to 50 mcg. The same guide argues injected oxytocin does not reach the brain the way nasal spray does.

How much bacteriostatic water for a 5 mg oxytocin vial?

2 mL (one vendor) or 3 mL (one guide); guides use 2 to 3 mL for 2 mg and 5 mg vials. At small doses the draw can fall under 2 units, so a finer 30-unit syringe helps. Enter your exact vial and water in a calculator.

How many mcg is 1 IU of oxytocin?

About 1.67 mcg. The European Pharmacopoeia sets 1 mg of oxytocin as 600 IU for labelling, and the WHO International Standard (12.5 IU in about 21 mcg) agrees within 1%; this page uses 600 IU per mg. One vendor and one dosing guide say about 2 mcg per IU (1 mg is about 500 IU), which would put about 20% more peptide in each IU dose. Research vials vary in purity too, so dose by what your product is labeled in when you can.
