Peptide storage: powder, mixed vials, fridge, freezer and travel
How to store peptides before and after mixing, how long they last, what to do after a warm day, and how to travel with them. Every figure shows where it came from.

The short version
- Powder (lyophilized): keep it cold, dry and dark. Guides use the fridge for weeks to months and the freezer for long-term storage.
- Mixed vials: fridge at 2 to 8 C, never frozen, away from light. Most guides use about 28 days.
- Opened bacteriostatic water: fridge, dated, out after 28 days.
- Branded pens: follow the label, which is usually more generous than guides are for vials.

Before mixing: powder
Peptides are sold dry because they are far more stable that way; the reactions that break peptides down run much faster in solution than in the dried state.
What guides say: most keep unopened powder in the fridge and move it to the freezer (around -20 C) for long-term storage. Several call short spells at room temperature, such as shipping, acceptable for powder. These are guide conventions. For most research peptides, no published stability study gives an exact number of months.
Keep vials in their box or a dark container, and let a cold vial warm up before opening it so moisture does not condense inside.

After mixing: the fridge, and the 28-day question
Store mixed vials in the fridge at 2 to 8 C. The back of a middle shelf holds temperature better than the door, as one guide points out. Do not freeze a mixed vial; guides agree on avoiding freeze-thaw.
Where 28 days comes from: CDC guidance, based on USP Chapter 797, is to date a punctured multi-dose vial and discard it within 28 days unless the maker says otherwise. Peptide guides borrow that number for mixed vials. It is a contamination rule for the preservative, not a stability test of your peptide. One guide's per-peptide estimates run from about a week to more than a month, and the same guide gives 24 to 48 hours for vials mixed with plain sterile water.
Practical rule: date the vial, keep it cold, and stop if it turns cloudy, grows particles or changes color.

Branded pens and labels
Approved products come with tested storage rules on the label:
- Ozempic: pens go in the fridge at 2 to 8 C before first use. After first use, a pen can be kept for up to 56 days at 15 to 30 C or in the fridge.
- Zepbound: fridge at 2 to 8 C, or unrefrigerated up to 30 C for up to 21 days.
Do not apply these numbers to a compounded or research vial. They describe the tested product in its own container.

Bacteriostatic water
Unopened bacteriostatic water is labeled for room temperature, 20 to 25 C. Once you puncture it, most guides say to move it to the fridge, write the date on it, and discard it 28 days later. Do not freeze it.

Left out overnight or got warm
This is one of the most searched peptide storage questions, and the honest answer is that for most research peptides nobody has published the data.
What we know: powder handles short warm spells better than solution, according to guides. Approved GLP-1 pens are tested for days to weeks at room temperature on their labels. Some competitor guides publish hour-by-hour potency loss tables for mixed vials; we have not found the studies behind those numbers, so we do not repeat them.
What to do: get it back in the fridge, look at it, and discard it if it is cloudy, has particles or changed color. A vial that spent hours in a hot car is a reasonable one to replace.

Traveling with peptides
- Pack peptides, syringes and swabs in your carry-on, not checked luggage, which can get very hot or cold, as travel guides advise.
- At US airport security, tell the officer you have medically necessary liquids before screening begins and put them in a separate bin. TSA allows unused syringes when they are with injectable medication, and used ones in a sharps or hard-surface container.
- Gel ice packs for medical needs are allowed even if partly melted; tell the officer.
- Keep mixed vials cold in an insulated bag with gel packs, and do not let them freeze against the pack.
- International travel is different. Rules on importing peptides vary by country, so check before you go.

Signs a vial has gone bad
Look before every draw. MedlinePlus tells users of any multi-dose vial to check for a change in color, small pieces floating in the liquid, or cloudiness. Guides add a few peptide-specific notes, such as the light blue of GHK-Cu being normal while a green or brown tint is not.
Community posts describe mixed vials turning milky overnight in the fridge. No authoritative explanation exists for every case, and the safe call is to discard it.
